The New Lebanon Council meeting recap from June 2, 2026, left a lasting impression—and not entirely for the reasons I expected.
I attended the meeting with someone who had never attended a council meeting before. As we arrived, we expected to learn about community issues, hear updates from local leaders, and observe how local government operates.
Instead, the evening became a reminder of how important meeting decorum, transparency, and public confidence are to effective local government.
While several important issues were discussed, the meeting often shifted away from policy and toward personal disagreements. As a result, it became difficult at times to follow the actual business being conducted.
Rules of Council Highlight the Importance of Professional Conduct
One of the first major items on the agenda involved adopting updated Rules of Council focused on civility, decorum, and respectful conduct during meetings.
The intent behind those changes was clear.
Residents deserve meetings where discussion focuses on issues, policies, and solutions rather than personal disputes.
Healthy debate is an important part of government. However, when conversations become personal or move away from the matter being discussed, residents can lose sight of the information they came to hear.
Local government works best when elected officials, staff, and residents maintain a professional environment that encourages participation and understanding.
Emergency Appropriations Raise Questions
One item that generated discussion involved an emergency supplemental appropriation.
During the meeting, the adjustment was casually referenced as approximately $67,000.
However, the appropriation documents provided to Council reflected total adjustments exceeding $522,000 across multiple funds.
Among the larger adjustments were:
- $245,000 in the Police Levy Fund
- $200,000 in General Fund transfers supporting police operations
- Additional appropriations involving sewer operations, parks, utilities, and roadway maintenance
Regardless of whether residents support these expenditures, understanding the full amount being appropriated is important.
Transparency begins with making sure residents clearly understand what is being approved and why.
Water and Wastewater Infrastructure Questions
One of the most significant discussions involved water and wastewater infrastructure.
Meeting materials referenced approximately $65,000 in wastewater-related repairs needed to maintain compliance and keep systems operating properly.
That discussion raised an important question:

Water and wastewater systems are among the most essential services a community provides.
Residents rely on them every day.
When repairs, compliance issues, or operational concerns arise, many residents would likely want to understand the situation, the risks involved, and the proposed solutions.
The discussion highlighted the importance of communication when critical infrastructure issues affect a community.
Public Participation Remains Important
Despite the challenges of the evening, one thing became very clear.
Residents continue to care deeply about their community.
Public comments reflected concerns about local issues, government operations, and the future direction of the City.
Even when opinions differed, the willingness of residents to attend and participate demonstrated a commitment to civic involvement.
That participation matters.
Local government functions best when residents remain informed and engaged.
A Conversation That Stayed With Me
As the meeting concluded and we were walking to our vehicle, another attendee stopped to introduce herself.
She asked whether this had been our first New Lebanon Council meeting.
When I told her it was, she offered an unexpected response.
She apologized.
She explained that she had recently started attending meetings herself and encouraged us to come back.
I then asked whether meetings were often similar to what we had just witnessed.
Her response was simple:
“Sadly, yes. But I still think it’s important to show up.”
That conversation stayed with me on the drive home.
Regardless of where anyone stands on the issues being debated, resident participation matters.
Showing up matters.
Listening matters.
Asking questions matters.
Communities become stronger when residents remain part of the conversation.
Final Thoughts
The biggest takeaway from this meeting was not any single vote or resolution.
Instead, it was the importance of trust, transparency, and professionalism in local government.
Residents deserve:

- Respectful discussions
- Transparency regarding financial decisions
- Open communication about infrastructure concerns
The City records and publishes its meetings, allowing residents to watch and form their own conclusions.
