School Board Presentation on New Schools and May Levy
The Kettering school levy discussion was the focus of a joint meeting between Kettering City Council and the Kettering Board of Education on March 31. I was glad to attend and hear the full presentation shared that evening.
The meeting began with a well-deserved celebration of the Fairmont High School Lady Firebirds. Their undefeated 28–0 season and State Championship title brought energy and pride to the room.
Once the recognition concluded, the room cleared significantly.
That shift stood out—especially given the importance of the topic being presented.
School Board Presentation on Future Facilities
The meeting primarily included a full presentation from the School Board outlining the future-ready facilities plan.
The discussion centered on:
- aging school buildings
- increasing maintenance costs
- long-term facility planning
- phased new construction and consolidation
Your notes reflect that several buildings are decades old and becoming more costly to maintain, raising the question of long-term sustainability.
The proposed plan aims to address these concerns while preparing for future student needs.
City Coordination and Traffic Planning
The City of Kettering also contributed to the discussion, particularly around infrastructure and safety.
Traffic studies and planning efforts were highlighted, with a focus on:
- separating parent drop-off and pick-up
- coordinating bus traffic
- accommodating pedestrian and bicycle access
These considerations are important when evaluating how new or updated school sites will function day-to-day.
Additional notes referenced enforcement activity and traffic monitoring, reinforcing that this is an active area of focus.
What Was Not Presented
It is important to note that this meeting included the School Board’s presentation and perspective.
It did not include opposing viewpoints or resident-led concerns during the session.
That makes it even more important for residents to seek out additional information, ask questions, and consider multiple perspectives before making a decision.
Do Your Research Before the May 5 Vote
This is a significant decision for the Kettering community.
Take the time to review the details, understand the long-term impact, and determine what is best for your household and community.

Final Thoughts
There is value in showing up and hearing information firsthand.
There is also value in continuing the conversation beyond the meeting itself.
The more informed residents are, the stronger the decisions will be.
